LA1: Understanding The Purpose Of Diegetic and Non Diegetic Sound

DIEGETIC SOUND
This exists ‘inside’ the story and can be heard by the characters
Speech - The sound of traffic - Gun shots.

Diegetic sound is a noise which has a source on-screen. They are noises which
have not been edited in, for example dialogue between characters or footsteps.

Another term for diegetic sound is actual sound.

Non-diegetic sound is a noise which does not have a source on-screen, they have
been added in. For example music, voiceover, sound effects.

Non-diegetic sounds are often used to add drama to moments that would be silent without it.

From about 50 seconds in is where the music starts to play. This is non-diegetic sound since the music has been added on top of the scene meaning that the characters can't hear it.
i think the scene work well with the music because if there was no music then it wouldn't be as affective since there would only be background noises. The music in this is a happy/exciting type of music and this really makes the scene better because if it was sad music that was playing then it would be as interesting and it would be awkward and boring. the music that was chosen for this scene really goes with the fact that he is swinging etc as its quite adventurous music.

This scene represents diegetic sound since the sound included is all heard by the characters. There is a sound of a radio in the background which could have been edited in after filming but since the characters can hear it is still diegetic sound. The music in this scene is almost comforting to the characters as its quite chilled out background music and its filling in the fact that they are up in space meaning that there is no noise. Without the music/noise it wouldn't be as interesting and it wouldn't set the scene as much as it does with music.
